Comparison Between Disposable and Cloth Baby Dispers

Baby dispers are among the most important baby care products that first mothers need. In most cases, the average person can only afford cloth diapers, since they are cheap and re-usable. On the contrary, high class citizens prefer using the disposable baby dispers because you do not need to clean them. Both cloth and disposable diapers have their pros and cons.  Disposable diapers have a number of environment effects while cloth diapers are the most preferred by many environmentalists. The modern cloth baby diapers come with more useful features compared to the ancient ones. They are available in different styles and design with fiber- filled strips. In addition, some have Velcro for fastening rather than the ancient safety pins. There are special laundry services that are designed for cleaning the cloth diapers.

Disposable diapers also come in different styles and designs. Some are designed with simple paper diapers and plastic covering while others have more complicated gel-like substance for better absorption. Some also have the famous cartoon pictures printed on them and better still, an elastic liner for enhanced fitting. Here are some of the major differences between the disposable and cloth baby dispers.

Convenience and Cost

Some may say that disposable baby dispers are the most convenient, but not after the arrival of the new features in the modern cloth diapers. New features like the additional liners in cloth diapers can be flushed, once they get soiled. Even so, many mothers prefer disposable diapers while camping, traveling or during g hospitalization because they do not cause spillage. Without a doubt, disposable diapers are more costly than the cloth type. Even though, the cost of sanitizing those made of cloth is slightly higher, you cannot compare the price of sanitizing them with that of buying new disposable ones. Different manufacturers sell disposable types at different prices and therefore, you cannot really quote their price. The cost of cloth baby dispers is cheaper since the cost of cleaning them is lower than buying brand new disposables ones.

Environmental effects and Health concerns

It is obvious that the disposable type contribute to environmental degradation more than the cloth diapers. A certain study conducted in America showed that over 200,000 trees and 80,000 pounds of plastic are needed to manufacture disposable diapers every year. Some manufacturers claim that their products are bio-degradable, but they still need air and sunlight, which is not available in some environs and as a result, they end up polluting the environment. On the other hand, the laundering process of the cloth diapers causes environmental effects, since laundry providers have to dispose waste water, which has human waste and detergents. In most cases, the use of baby dispers will cause rash. This is a very irritating condition caused by abrasion, bacteria and friction. Both disposable and cloth baby dispers can cause this condition, but using [Read More]

BABY CARE GUIDE FOR NEW PARENTS: HOW TO CHOOSE A BABY CRIB?

Baby care guide for new parents: How to choose a baby crib?

Baby cribs are now made to very strict standards. Newborns are soft and fragile and they are not yet aware of their surroundings. As a result, when you select a crib, linen and mattress, be very careful. It would be much better idea to lean towards usefulness, hygiene and longevity in the baby crib rather than beauty and frills. Baby cots are also expensive and you will need a cot that will last at least till the baby is 1-2 years old.

General baby care concerns while selecting a baby crib

Types of cribs- There are a large range of cribs in the market and most are compliant with US safety standards. Baby cribs are strictly manufactured according to government standards. If you buy an unassembled cot and assemble it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, make sure that the joins, connections and links are properly connected. There should be no protruding wing nuts, links and chains that will hurt the baby.

Slat safety- A safe crib should have slats that are not more than 2=-3/8th of an inch across. If you choose a drop side, then make sure that the sides are at least 9 inches above the mattress to prevent the baby from rolling off the mattress. When the drop sides are raised, they should be at a distance of 26 inches above the mattress to provide adequate support. This is because 9-10 month old babies tend to pull themselves up using the side of the cot. The cot slats should not allow the baby’s head to slip through and they should be high enough to allow the growing baby to hold the sides and stand up straight without falling out. Along with the required height, the drop sides should lock securely and stay in place without falling down.

Mattress support- Ensure that the mattress you have selected is hypoallergenic and made from natural breathable materials. The mattress should be flush with the sides of the baby crib and it should be thick enough to cushion an infant delicate head while providing support for a growing toddler. If possible, find a baby crib that will allow you to raise and lower the mattress as your child grows. Safety rules state that mattresses should be compulsorily 27 1/4 51 5/8 inches in size and not more than 6 inches in thickness. Ideally under the mattress, there should be two supporting bars or stabilizing bars that will hold up the weight of the growing baby.

Casters or wheels- Wheels are necessary but they should have brakes which will keep the crib in place when stationary or allow it to be moved about when required.

Baby crib varieties to be careful of!

  • If you are using a non-US product, please be very careful with the paint on the baby crib, the wood, the slats etc. There have been growing concerns about lead-based paints that are used in non-US products.
  • When using portable cribs, look for wooden ones that will support the weight of a growing baby.
  • Avoid all models that have netted sides or mesh-based floorboards as the mesh will tear or it will get stuck in the teeth of growing babies.

For example,  a roomy bag should be able to carry momma’s breast pump, sterilized bottles, nappies, waste bags for used nappies, wet wipes, baby clothing, baby creams etc and it should be stylish and pretty enough to be carried everywhere. These are just a few of the guiding tips by which you can choose your own baby change bags.

Straps- baby change bags are heavy. They should be able to carry a whole lot of stuff without the strap coming off or tearing. As a result, baby change bags should have shoulder straps that are made from durable double strength nylon and have short hand straps that can be used in case of emergencies. A few companies provide detachable secondary straps that allow the bag to be used as a backpack when required for easy carrying. Baby carry bags should be compatible with pushchairs and with the car too. A few models come with adjustable strap that allow it to be slung over the pushchair and attached in place.

Color and Size- There is a range of colors in baby change bags in the market. Colorful ones are great if you want to buy them. However, there are wonderful black, dark brown and dark blue versions that look just computer carry bags. These are a wonderful option as they appear unisex. Both parents can carry them and they can double up for use as a carry bag for a growing baby too. Baby change bags come in a small size that is ideal for toddlers but there are larger bags too. Generally, buy a size that is larger than you require. This is because a large baby change bag can help to carry larger items for a growing baby. Consider this a onetime investment and buy accordingly.  The same bag should ideally last you till your baby is about 2-3 years old.

Interior lining and pockets- The interior of the bag should be lined with a plastic easily wiped lining that will not pick up food stains, nappy stains etc. most bags will come with this type of lining and they will also have separate zippered pockets where the used nappies, used cloths and soiled clothing can be stored separately.  Mesh pockets on the outside are ideal as they are expandable and they can easily carry large water bottles, milk bottles and other goods. If you are using cloth nappies, ensure that the pockets are bigger to hold the soiled nappies.

Self standing bases with an easy to clean exterior- The bag should have solid base that will make sure that the bag stands free when put down. The outside of the bag should also be easy to clean and machine-washable too. [Read More]
